It’s not just my opinion. The numbers speak for themselves. All Stars 7 is neck in neck with All Stars 2 according to IMDb. And we all know how monumental All Stars 2 was. But why is this years “All Winners” season so popular?
The winners are back
It may be obvious, but let’s just think about the fact that the freaking WINNERS of RuPaul’s Drag Race are competing together on a season of All Stars. That’s mind blowing. As a long time Drag Race fan, I never in my wildest dreams thought it would be possible. Heck, I still remember how I wished for All Stars 2. Yet somehow in 2022, we have a winners season.
The rumors were circulating a few years back, but everyone at the time thought it was just a stupid joke someone posted on the internet. It’s quite impressive for the show’s production company to actually persuade some of the winners to return. Let’s not forget, those queens represent the top tier of drag.
The level of talent is unprecedented
The winners are hungry for the win. They are playing it nice, however they are fiercely eyeing the crown. The diverse personalities are dazzling. The energy of this cast is off the charts. We get to see these gorgeous queens yet again, therefore we have the chance to fall in love with them all over again. The queens are performing at their personal peak and that’s why this season is so amazing.
However, the winners are not resting. In fact, they are all giving their best. Jinkx slayed the snatch game, Raja is working IT on the runway, Trinity is showing her funny side and I could just go on and on. It’s just so astonishing to see these performers competing together on such a high level.
The format has changed
Let’s be honest, people were getting sick of the “lipstick” format. As we were all witnessing the downfall of “UK vs The World”, I secretly hoped they would change the format for the future spinoffs. I was not the only one. The fans were really mad at “UK vs The World” and rightfully so. How are you supposed to enjoy a show, when the best ones go home first? How can you root for a mediocre queen?
The existing format was my main concern with the “All Winners” season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It would be so risky to send any winner home first, or even second. Just imagine the backlash. I still remember Manila’s elimination on All Stars 4. That was crazy. The backlash that Naomi Smalls got was truly disheartening. Well, I was a Manila stan, however I didn’t support the negativity against Naomi. It’s still a reality tv show at the end of the day.
This time, the format has changed in a positive way. Nobody goes home, the queens are accumulating legendary legend stars and quite frankly – the “platinum” plunger is a funny gimmick. It feels like this season the queens are uplifted and celebrated more so than ever. And it’s a welcome change.
No overproduction
Most of the time, the regular seasons and even All Stars can be overproduced for the sake of storyline. We have the underdog, the frontrunner, the villain, the filler queens etc. However, on “All Winners” there seem to be less production driven storylines. The queens are painted in a fairly good light and we don’t have clear stereotypical characters. To be honest, that’s quite amazing for Drag Race. Granted, we are not at the end of the season yet, so there might be some shenanigans ahead for us. However, thus far the show has been pretty kind to all competitors. I enjoy the subtle dramatic moments – like Monet and Trinity forming an alliance or The Vivienne gunning for Jinkx. It’s all just a great, fun time and the fans are responding positively.
RuPaul is living for the girls
According to some past contestants, RuPaul can sometimes be distant and cold. I’m not gonna mention what he said to Pearl on Season 7, but gurl. By now we know that RuPaul takes his business seriously.
It’s so nice to see Ru casually interact with the winners in the workroom. He laughs a lot and obviously he’s having a lot of fun. We love to see it.
Final thoughts
I really didn’t expect this “All Winners” season to be this amazing and I genuinely enjoyed every single episode so far and I’m excited for more. I honestly don’t know who to root for. My picks for the win are Jinkx, Trinity, Jaida or Raja, but I like all the girls.
