This is a tough one, since I’m a big Jujubee fan. I remember watching her on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2 way back in 2010 and she was amazing at that time. Her drag aesthetic was always a bit more on the simple side. Her entrance looks were always “mall” drag, even on AllStars Season 1, however we all had big expectations for her on UK vs The World.
Jujubee and her drag looks.
Now, I have to say, I was living for Jujubee’s looks 10 years ago, but times have changed. Drag has evolved so much over the years and people expect more even from the new queens. When you compare Jujubee’s drag looks with someone like Willow Pill you can see a big difference. Willow’s looks don’t particularly strike me as being very expensive, but they have an idea, a story. However, Jujubee has served us very underwhelming looks on every newer season of Drag Race she competed.
We only got 2 episodes of UK vs The World, but in these episodes, you can see how her drag is not up to par with other queens in the competition. Her entrance look was the same as the promo look for AllStars 5 two years ago.
I don’t mind a resourceful queen but damn, Jujubee is a legend and she definitely has the budget to bring us new looks every season. Therefore, I don’t quite understand her decision to serve us a look we’ve already seen years ago.
Her other looks on UK vs The World were also very underwhelming to say the least. Jujubee’s outfits are just too simple for the main stage. Michelle noticed this pattern and I’m glad she said something on this week’s episode of UK vs The World.
The simplicity continues…
This week the queens on UK vs The World had to serve us 3 ball looks. They had to create the third outfit from scratch – a look that RuPaul herself would wear. The first look was a “cat” inspired look – a kitty girl if you may. However, Jujubee’s outfit was nothing catlike. She even served us the same old lavender wig she always uses… Not a fan of this look.
The second look was supposed to be “butch” drag. Yet again, Jujubee didn’t bring it. This outfit looks store-bought. Noting inspiring or even “butch” about it. I get she wants to serve us her interpretation, but this is just not enough. This shouldn’t be a look from a seasoned queen. And that purple wig… Again…
Queens had to create the third look from scratch. An outfit that RuPaul would wear. Yet again, Jujubee didn’t serve what people and the judges were expecting. Her dress was very simplistic and her panties were showing. Now, I understand she’s not a seamstress or a designer, however she brought all the other looks with her.
Jujubee was in the bottom this episode, but was saved by Janey. I really hope she steps it up and finally brings some gag worthy looks to the stage. I still remember her final look from AllStars 5 – now that was amazing.
Are looks everything?
Drag queen has to look good and serve us an illusion, but that’s not all. Jujubee shines in the personality department and we know she can bring it on the Snatch Game and in the acting challenges. I hope she can recover from those lukewarm critiques and become a frontrunner again. If she makes it to the Snatch Game, all eyes will be on her.
