The new beginning!
OMG! The first episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14 finally aired and it was fabulous! For the thirsty ones, the sneak peek was definitely not enough and I personally couldn’t wait for the premiere. Keep on reading, if you want to review the first episode with me. Beware of the spoilers though!
Split premiere
This time we get 2 openings yet again. That’s right, the same format that was first introduced in Season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. We get to see first seven Drag Queens as they strut into the workroom with their own catchphrases. I’m glad we can focus on these queens, but the pressure is on for them to perform. Imagine a top 7 scenario, all eyes on them! Here’s the sneak peek as they walk into the workroom:
First 7 Queens
Alyssa Hunter – a queen from Puerto Rico, looking like a fierce hunter as she walked first into the workroom. Out of drag she’s a snack, but as Alyssa, you’ll be her snack. What’s my opinion on Alyssa? She seems friendly and well put together. I’m getting some spicy and pageantry vibes from her which is good, therefore I’m interested to see how she does in the competition.
Bosco – the skanky alternative girl from Seattle. Her entrance look is very interesting, a combination of a fun yet classy black and white devil look. Her makeup is also quite different – the eyebrows especially. She said she’s very competitive and has her eyes on the crown.
Kornbread – is you hungry? Cause she’s baked and the bakery is officially open! Kornbread is the energetic, large and in charge queen from LA! She seems like a great time, her look is giving me a fun, leather diva realness.
Willow Pill – a sweet, little doll from Denver. Her entrance look caused quite a commotion among the queens. Her simple aesthetic was confusing yet intriguing. The shoes, or as Kornbread called them “flip flops” were the main critique of the look.
PS: RuPaul pronounces her name as “little”, cutely implying she’s young.
Kerri Colby – what a gorgeous queen! Every kiss begins with a K, hey! Kerri is sporting the transgender colors in this entrance look and she looks absolutely amazing. Even Willow was lovestruck by her, staring at her and worshipping her beauty.
June Jambalaya – this queen describes herself as southern and savage. Her entrance outfit does look a little simple in my opinion – a colorful jumpsuit over a beige leotard just doesn’t excite anyone. It’s season 14. But I like her personality, she seems feisty.
Orion Star – are you ready boots?! Orion is the first queen representing Michigan and the entrance look is nice, however a little basic. She describes herself as a campy, resourceful queen.
Mini Challenge
The first mini challenge was the crazy spinning wheel photoshoot and the queens were quaking. Contestants were strapped to the wheel and then spun while they posed and served face. This mini challenge was very funny and the photos turned out quite nice in my opinion. The winner was Kerri and her photo was gorgeous, although she had some trouble on the wheel. She won 2500 doohlass courtesy of J.J. Malibu.
Maxi challenge
CNT – charisma, nerve and talent SHOW.
June Jambalaya was performing an African dance routine and I did enjoy it, however it was very inconsistent and eventually flatlined. Her headband kept slipping down, therefore it was somewhat distracting. I liked her outfit and the background song, however her dance was nothing special – average at best.
Bosco served a gorgeous burlesque number in a dark green dress with pink petals. Her talent show was nothing out of the ordinary, however the concept of undressing by throwing petals off of your dress is pretty unexpected and exciting. I did enjoy her performance and the judges did as well.
Alyssa Hunter was lip syncing to a rock/metal song and she did good, however the judges seemed a bit confused when she came down the runway in her elegant look. I’m personally not sold on her talent show performance, because she needed to give something more than just lip syncing in a rock outfit with a pink guitar.
Kerri Colby looked fierce! She was lip syncing to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj and jumping rope at the same time. The performance was good, however it didn’t blew me away. Kerri’s white performance outfit looked very cute.
Orion Story performed a comedy skit and it was bizarre. A horrendous, smoking, dirty aerobics instructor teaching us about a healthy workout. The performance was confusing and by no means funny in any way. The jokes were flat, Orion looked like it was her first day in drag and it was not cute. I know, it was intentionally supposed to be cheap comedy, but unfortunately the result was just bad.
Kornbread served us some good old lip syncing to her original song. I did enjoy her performance, so did the other judges, however Michelle Visage didn’t understand her most of the time, because she was speaking too fast. Kornbread was fabulous and hilarious – that’s enough for me.
Willow Pill’s performance was so unexpected and crazy. Sometimes I didn’t know what I was watching, however in the end everything came together. The absurdity of it all was enough for RuPaul to gush over her, therefore it was clear she was continuing in the competition.
The runway looks
Runway Theme: Signature Show-Stopping Drag
June Jambalaya looked ok, however some of the judges were not impressed with her outfit, because they could see the black shorts underneath. For me, she looked great, like a music performer, however nothing too spectacular.
Bosco served us some black glamour on the runway. She was praised for her fashion and beauty, but also her talent show performance.
Alyssa Hunter brought some opulence and elegance to the runway, however she was criticized for the dichotomy between her talent show performance and her runway look. Ultimately, I think she just wanted to show more versatility but it kind of backfired.
Kerri Colby was warming us up on a winter evening with her lion shoulder fur coat and a pink mini “dress” underneath. RuPaul was in love with her cream brown boots! Kerri looked like a fairytale warrior princess, therefore I enjoyed the look very much.
Orion Story gave us colorful mushroom on the runway. The outfit had a gimmick, revealing three titties, however it was not effective. I didn’t hate the look, but I also didn’t love it. It was “meh”.
Kornbread’s look was sparkly, however I didn’t like it. It was nothing unexpected or wow worthy. I do like how she sells the looks on the runway, but her goofiness is slowly getting old. I just want her to go down the runway without that extra face grimacing.
Willow Pill was ok. Weird color choice. Of course, Michelle Visage was not pleased with all the green in the outfit, however I thought it was quite interesting.
Who goes home?
Kornbread won the main challenge. June Jambalaya and Orion Story were in the bottom, therefore they had to lip sync to Lizzo’s “Water Me”. Ultimately, Orion Story was the first queen of Season 14 to sashay away.

What a great first episode. I was very glad there was no Pork Chop Dock this time around. The first part of the split premiere was gorgeous and I can’t wait for Episode 2!
