On the last episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race it was reunion time. All the queens got to sit down and talk about the long ass Season 14. There were some obvious dramatic moments and the queens finally got the opportunity to hash it out. I can’t help but feel how Daya Betty always seems to be portrayed in a negative way. Her directness is admirable and is something we rarely see these days on reality tv shows.
Wha’ ha’ happened was…
When it was time to talk about Jasmine and Daya’s dramatic altercation, Daya said she could have worded her opinions a little bit differently. However, she didn’t apologize for vocalizing her opinion on Jasmine’s and Jorgeous’ outfits regarding the main challenges.
This is where the story starts to unravel. We see Jasmine and Jorgeous replying to Daya in way that obviously indicates they were feeling victimized. Jasmine stood up and told Daya she wasn’t replying to her phone calls when she wanted to clear the situation. Even the other girls chimed in and said Daya was pushing it too far with her opinion and in certain situations she was too direct.
Of course Daya Betty felt really attacked (Laganja where are u?) and started crying. Kerri tried to clear the air by saying the competition is a stressful situation and everyone handles stress differently. Eventually, we got a mediocre resolution of the feud and Daya apologized for making Jasmine and Jorgeous feel some type of way.
The narrative
While I do agree that Daya was clearly very direct in certain situations she obviously didn’t have any bad intentions. Cut the girl some slack! She was entertaining to watch and I appreciated her openness. Season 14 was long enough, I enjoyed Daya’s dramatic moments and her feuds with other queens. I can’t imagine what a snooze fest this season would be without Daya’s input.
Let’s step back for a second and see what the production is doing. They clearly edited Daya to be the villain of the season. How the heck is she supposed to win Drag Race? The finale is next week and this is what we get? They could have easily eliminated her in this long ass season. However, they chose to have her in the final 5. That’s just ridiculous, because she received a very negative edit. In what way does her appearance on the show and especially in the reunion episode indicate she’s the production’s pick to win?
I personally think Daya is a great drag queen. Her looks on the runway were one of the most stunning I’ve seen in a while. I think the production desperately wants to have this underdog story. Eliminated queen comes back and is in the finale… Yay. But clearly they are painting her as a villain, so there is a very low chance she’s going to win the whole competition. Just think about Raven, Phi Phi, Roxxxy, Gia, Ginger, Acid Betty, The Vixen… Did they win?
I’m excited for the finale. How about you? Do you think Daya Betty was overly mean? Or was she just honest? Leave a comment. Let’s chat!
